My name is Tom Mullen and I serve as a FOCUS Missionary at Ave Maria University. I was raised Catholic but I never really knew what that meant until high school when I first started to think about my faith. However, it really wasn’t until my time in college at Colorado State University that I truly started to discover and encounter Jesus Christ and develop a relationship with Him.
It was through Him that I was able to overcome the many hardships I encountered and finally fill up the emptiness I felt. After graduation, I realized I felt a longing in my heart to share my experiences with others and help them discover their relationship with Christ so that they can feel the same joy that I do.
Like I said above, I work as a missionary with FOCUS, the Fellowship Of Catholic University Students. FOCUS exists to invite college students into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ and His Church then inspire and equip them for a lifetime of Christ-centered evangelization, discipleship and friendship in which they teach others to do the same. Today, FOCUS has missionaries on over 100 campuses across the United States and we continue to expand.
My first year as a missionary at Ave Maria was full of challenges, successes, failures, laughs, tears and lots of learning and growth. I really learned what it meant to be Christ-like to others and how to truly serve selflessly. The students have taught me so much about myself and about GO. They’ve helped me grow so much more than I anticipated and I only pray that I can do the same for them. I absolutely love working with the students and I am without a doubt blessed to have been placed there.
I wouldn’t be who I am today without the many wonderful people that God blessed my life with through FOCUS. It’s for that reason I decided to apply to be a missionary and use my gifts to share the gospel with college students who may not know how wonderful a relationship with the Lord is.
